Mahtola Wittmer sucht das Sonderbare im Alltäglichen in Fotografie, Installation und Performance. Sie sucht den Punkt, an dem das Normale absurd und das Absurde als Normalität erscheint. In ihren Arbeiten als Fotografin und Performerin zelebriert sie Augenblicke, Gesten und Assoziationen, in denen Gewohntes und Alltägliches auf der Kippe steht, sonderbar wird, ein staunendes Lächeln oder Schaudern erzeugt. Ihre Arbeit ist von Stille und Poesie geprägt.

I read the ending of books first
And I lift my chin easily
My crying eye is due to the wind
My absences are caused by feelings

I can’t stand up
The sky slips over my hands

They smile red and talk grey
I pretend to understand everything
There’s a guy crying outside
Gold powder on my face

Me and the man are out on the town
Worse than a simple half we count for half-half
Straight onto the roadside like origamis
The stretched-out arm seems broken it’s all cobs and woodchips

These weird children
Spat out as though by accident
Hiding the effort in the scratcher
And their creepy song as a banner that goes:
„I do all my make-up with mercurochrome
against pop-ups that guaranty me the throne“.
